Car Insurance - swiftcover.com urges motorists to sign petition to stop new travel tax

Monday, 01 January 2007

swiftcover.com, the 100% online motor insurer, is supporting Peter Roberts', a member of the Association of British Drivers, petition to Downing Street to scrap the planned vehicle tracking and road pricing policy, and urges all motorists to add their signature to the petition by the deadline on 20th February 2007.

Under the proposed policy drivers will have to spend up to £200 on a tracking device and £89 a month in road tolls.

Research carried out by swiftcover.com reveals financial levies imposed on motorists by the Government won't stop drivers from getting behind the wheel. Two thirds (63%) of Brits would not drive their car less if a congestion charge was introduced in their area and when it comes to the key issue of reducing their car journeys, over one in four (27%) motorists say they would not drive their car less even if their overall motoring costs doubled.

Andrew Blowers, Chief Executive Officer of swiftcover.com, comments: "The research overwhelming proves that even if fiscal penalties were introduced that were hefty enough to move motorists to reduce car use, this would only result in a miniscule reduction in car use.  We should face up to the fact that financial levies to discourage car use are not the answer.

"A more effective strategy would be for the Government to promote alternative transport, as well as working with fuel suppliers and car manufacturers to help promote more environmentally friendly driving options."
