Car Review: Mercedes - M Class  Series 05 (4 stars)

The Mercedes ML Class is a leviathan, and comes with rapper cool and a price tag to match

This second generation of ML Class is much improved over the first - a better quality interior and more aggression in the styling. And unlike its obese older brother the GL, the ML is a bit cool, just on the right side of extravagantly large. You still couldn't be a shrinking violet and drive it though, because it is still a huge car.

The ML isn't really fun to drive, but it's entirely capable of doing everything that you ask of it. Trick suspension means it rides well and remains comfortable even over the most severely rutted of surfaces. It's entirely pleasant cruising along the motorway too, which means it will suit you for 80% of the time you're driving it.

In fact, who needs a car to zip at breakneck speeds through winding lanes, anyway? We found the ML entirely restful and soothing - this is the kind of car that could improve your quality of life, like an orthopaedic pillow.

As you'd expect with any Mercedes, the standard of equipment inside the ML is high-quality stuff and the fit and finish is improving back to previous standards with each new car the company brings to market. You can tell that Mercedes has a real point to prove in tackling these criticisms head on.

Although the interior is very spacious and comfortable, the lack of a seven seat option will no doubt harm the ML quite considerably. It has probably been done to avoid cramping the GL's style, but when competitors like Volvo's XC90 and Land Rover's Discovery are packing the two extra pews you can't really get away with not offering them.

The running costs of the ML are going to be predictably massive - even the more economical of the diesel engines can't elbow their way into the thirties when it comes to mpg. The fuel consumption of the bigger petrol engines will just make you cry. This car will cost a lot to maintain and insure too, which is understandable given the fact it could flatten houses.

A compelling car, though, and if you have the cash, why shouldn't you? If you were feeling particularly mad you could go for the ML63 AMG, but then we're into sheikh territory. If you can afford to buy and run the ML - and it's quite a big if - then it is a satisfyingly indulgent and naughty car to own.
