Car Review: Nissan - Almera  Series 95 (3 stars)

Average. Nissan's family hatchback is extremely reliable and economical and excellent value for money. Dull to drive, however, it needs new Micra flair to become a hit.

Why did the Almera cross the road? To get to the middle. Nissan's family favourite is a practical and well equipped car but it misses any exciting touches. Buy only if motoring to you is just A to B. Avoid the entry-level 1.5 petrol models because the engine lacks any punch, while the 2.2 diesel pushes out 134bhp and has plenty of pulling power. As always with a Nissan, the Almera is safe and well screwed together, with a superb reliability record. If you can stretch your finances to one of the SE versions, they come with a long list of standard equipment too. The Tino mini people-carrier version is a spacious family vehicle.
