We all like a bargain but sometimes price simply isn't everything. Take the Tata Safari. Built on the cheap in India, when you compare the specification with other four-wheel drives it looks like a winner. However, this is simply a bad deal because the build quality is appalling and, when you finally decide to sell on to another unsuspecting motorist, you'll be lucky to collect more than a few rupees. The 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine is woefully underpowered and gives the Safari about as much finesse as a three-legged giraffe. Anti-lock brakes, air conditioning and alloy wheels are standard but you would be better off with a secondhand Toyota RAV4.
