Time hasn't been kind to the 7 Series, and now the freshness of the design has faded it looks overwrought and clumsy.

In a word: brilliant. The 7 Series attacks corners far better than you'd expect something this size too. High-speed stability is outstanding, too.

The well-finished cabin is a good place to spend longer journeys, despite the perpetual irritation of the fiddly I Drive system.

All versions deliver plenty of performance, from the most basic 730i upwards. 445 bhp 760i feels a bit like overkill, though. Refined, frugal 730d diesel is the most sensible choice.

The audio system is brilliant - as is the satnav, but for the need to work it via iDrive.
