Car Statistics:
BMW - Z4
Series
(4 stars)
Styling
(3 stars)
We like the Z4's butch and angular styling which brings this classically proportioned roadster right up to date. However, as with the last Z4, we fear it may be too inelegant and aggressive for some sports car buyers.
Handling
(4 stars)
Sharp and predictable, enter a corner too quickly and the Z4 will wash into understeer before the car's rear-end does anything unexpected. The steering also offers pleasing amounts of feedback.
Comfort
(4 stars)
It's more spacious than many sports car rivals particularly the Porsche Boxster. The cabin is well thought out and minimalist, but the driving position could use a little more adjustment to get really comfortable. Ride quality is really hurt by an adaptive sport mode, but otherwise the Z4 is supple and compliant.
Quality
(5 stars)
Inside and out the attention to detail and precision engineering is tangible. And that's reassuring when you're considering a car with a complicated metal folding roof.
Performance
(5 stars)
The 35i can carry occupants from 0-62mph in a thrilling 5.1 seconds which is competitive for a sports car of this type. It feels every bit as quick on the road too, the excellent forced induction 3.0-litre engine offering seemingly endless surge without hesitation or lag. And even the entry level 23i is quick enough to be fun.
Roominess
(4 stars)
There's more space in the cabin than you might expect, and because of the minimalist design, clever cubby holes and nets in which to store things.
Costs
(4 stars)
More fuel efficient engines make the Z4 easier to live with day to day. Even the range-topping 35i can return 30mpg combined. Insurance will be costly, though and BMW servicing isn't cheap.
Value
(3 stars)
The Z4 is priced competitively but, after you've specified a few desirable options, can easily become a very substantial outlay. At least, because it's got the metal roof and improved fuel economy, some will find they can now use the Z4 as a main, everyday car, so its usefulness may make it easier to justify the expense.
Stereo
(3 stars)
The excellent sat nav is an option that costs more than £2k. Various stereos are available, as is a TV screen, but the most desirable are, again, expensive options.
