Styling
(3 stars)
Could be worse, could be better. The Epica is simple and uncomplicated in its looks, which works in its favour. From the side it could be considered quite sleek and in a darker colour its simple lines are not unappealing.
Handling
(2 stars)
The Epica's size counts against it, as it is certainly no Mondeo underneath. It feels wallowy around corners and, although it can be hustled along, it does not really enjoy it.
Comfort
(3 stars)
There's a lot of space in the Epica, which is a big contributor to the cars comfort. The seats are supportive whilst the cabin doesn't suffer much road or wind noise. Its suspension has clearly been tuned to benefit ride quality over handling too.
Quality
(3 stars)
Although it might be basic in places, the Epica cannot be faulted for its build quality. Chevrolets are also pretty sound mechanically so reliability shouldn't pose much of a problem.
Performance
(3 stars)
The two 2.0-litre engines both offer decent performance. The diesel unit does get slightly more horsepower and substantially more torque than the petrol equivalent, but both can hustle the Epica to 62mph in less than ten seconds.
Roominess
(4 stars)
The Epica has a similar size footprint to the Mondeo at 4.8 metres long. As a result you get bags of rear space, which can easily accommodate 3 adults and a boot which betters Chevrolet's Captiva 4x4.
Costs
(3 stars)
Not bad considering the Epica's size. The diesel unit is obviously the better choice, offering 46mpg on the combined cycle, whilst its CO2 emissions put it in tax band E costing £170 per year.
Value
(5 stars)
The entry-level model, if you can call it that, gets a raft of standard equipment including air con, cruise control, part leather upholstery and 16-inch alloy wheels. Its might not be the best to drive but its low starting price means you're getting a lot of car for not a lot of cash.
Stereo
(2 stars)
The stereo is again, basic, but competent and its speakers sound respectable. The LX gets eight speakers and a 6-CD auto changer and sat nav is only available as an - unusually pricey - optional extra.
