Styling
(4 stars)
Almost top of the class even if the update is practically redundant. The Mazda 2 gets a set of smartly finished lines which very nearly top the sharp good looks gifted to its sister car the Ford Fiesta.
Handling
(4 stars)
The 2 looks quite sporty, and that promise is largely realised on the road. It's responsive, doesn't roll much and is easy to drive briskly, making for a reasonably entertaining drive on a twisty road.
Comfort
(3 stars)
Decent room up front, reasonable cruising refinement and comfortable seats make this a better long-distance car than you might expect, and if the ride quality is sometimes a little firm it's still pretty civilized overall.
Quality
(3 stars)
The Mazda 2 gains a few new materials in the facelift, but they certainly don't divert attention from the fact that the dashboard is constructed entirely made from hard-surfaced plastics. Still, its appearance is of acceptable quality.
Performance
(3 stars)
Despite the Mazda?s comparative low weight, none of the petrol engines offer startling performance. They?re peppy enough if you?re prepared to work them though, with the higher-powered 1.3-litre unit emerging as the best of the bunch.
Roominess
(3 stars)
Space up front is reasonable, and the boot decently sized. Oddments space inside is okay, and runs to a rather odd magazine rack in the front glovebox - it might hold a couple of thinner mags - and bottle-holders.
Costs
(4 stars)
Emissions reductions mean the range drops its tax band rating over the old car but, in truth, none of them should be expensive to run. Even the 1.5-litre Sport version returns a claimed mpg that?s pushing 50.
Value
(4 stars)
The Mazda 2 is surrounded by worthy competitors, but its pricing does at least significantly undercut the equivalent rivals offered by mainstream manufacturers like Ford and Vauxhall. However, the Skoda Fabia and Hyundai are likely to offer customers substantial food for thought.
Stereo
(2 stars)
You'll be searching in vain for a sat nav as there isn't even an option for one on the Mazda 2's spec sheet. The stereo is a very basic affair, but it does at least come with the MP3 player connectivity.
