Car Statistics: Mazda - 3  Series 04 (3 stars)

Styling (4 stars)

The Mazda3 remains one of the sharpest-looking family hatchbacks around. A refreshing alternative to 'default choice' rivals.

Handling (3 stars)

Agile and composed over twisty roads - the 3 is relatively satisfying to drive quickly. Precise steering remains the lynchpin of the dynamic equation.

Comfort (3 stars)

The 3's ride quality is a step behind the class leaders, but there's enough suppleness in its fundamentally firm setup to make the hatchback reasonably compliant. Better refinement hasn't subdued all of the road noise, but overall the car is a comfortable companion.

Quality (4 stars)

There's little doubting the durability of the Mazda3. It carries on the Japanese firm's reputation for high-grade materials that are put together with care and attention to detail.

Performance (3 stars)

The musclebound MPS aside, there are no real eye-openers in the Mazda3 range. Concerns about economy and emissions trump all-out pace across the board. Consequently it's better to avoid the petrols - especially the lacklustre base spec 1.6-litre engine - and take a punt on the diesels.

Roominess (3 stars)

Like some of its closest competitors, it's possible to squeeze two full size adults into the rear, but only if they negotiate with those in the front for legroom. The boot is a little short on volume, but the week's shopping should disappear without too much fuss.

Costs (3 stars)

Fuel economy is respectable enough for the petrol versions and very competitive for diesels. The new 1.6-litre engine is the pick of the bunch, offering the possibility of 64mpg returns to those blessed with the patience of saints.

Value (4 stars)

Well aware of its position in the market, Mazda has priced the 3 at the cut-throat end of segment. It undercuts the class leaders and is comparatively well equipped, but don't expect the premium standard that Ford and Volkswagen now aspire to.

Stereo (3 stars)

The optional satellite navigation system is easy to use and work. Standard CD-playing stereo has good sound quality, top-spec versions get a very good Bose-branded system.
