Styling
(4 stars)
The old Cayenne was no looker, and the new one may still divide opinion, but the styling is easier on the eye, and the links to the sports cars are now clearer. This is what the original should have looked like when it first arrived.
Handling
(4 stars)
On the road, this is the Cayenne's trump card - it handles like a car half its size. The only let down is the electric steering system on the hybrid version that dampens the feel slightly.
Comfort
(4 stars)
The interior comfort is superb, with supportive seats offering both heating and cooling. The ride lets the car down slightly though, with it crashing over irregularities in the road surface in a jarring manner.
Quality
(4 stars)
The quality of the interior is a thing to behold - it is a wealth of stitched leather and chunky buttons. It is essentially the same as the new Panamera, and is a million miles away from the old Cayenne's interior.
Performance
(5 stars)
This is far more a sporty-SUV than a mud-tackling off roader, and it is swift no matter what engine you go for. The Turbo is the fastest, but the S provides just as much fun for less money.
Roominess
(3 stars)
As a big 4x4 there is plenty of room in the Cayenne's cabin, but it does not offer the myriad of storage boxes or luggage space that you might hope for in a family SUV. The boot is small for the segment at just 580 litres, rising to 1690 with the seats folded.
Costs
(3 stars)
Forget about the standard petrols, the diesel will be the cheapest to run with a claimed mpg figure of 38.2. The hybrid is not bad at 34.4mpg, but will set you back several thousand more to buy in the first place.
Value
(2 stars)
This is an expensive car, and you are paying for the badge rather than much else. It can be significantly more than some of its rivals, although it does offer a decent amount of standard kit including 18-inch alloys, electric seats and a full leather interior.
Stereo
(3 stars)
The stereo offers a good quality of sound, but can be hard to hear over the monstrous roar of the engine at times. The satnav is clear in its instructions, but the whole system is a bit fiddly to use.
