Car Statistics: Renault - MeganeĀ  Series 96 (3 stars)

Styling (3 stars)

You'll immediately know if the hatchback's rump-heavy styling is for you or not. Saloon, estate and CC convertible are far more visually conservative.

Handling (3 stars)

Completely safe - but completely insipid, too. Lots of grip and decent road holding, but rubbery brakes and over-light steering mar the dynamic experience.

Comfort (4 stars)

The driving position is good and the Megane copes admirably with high-speed motorway cruising. Ride can be a bit firm in town, though.

Quality (3 stars)

Some of the cabin trim is starting to feel very old fashioned by modern standards and build quality still isn't all it could be.

Performance (3 stars)

Entry level 1.4 and 1.6 litre petrol engines both lack punch, but the diesels are all good - and the range-topping 2.0 litre turbocharged petrol RenaultSport versions are very rapid.

Roominess (4 stars)

Still one of the segment's bigger cars with lots of room front and rear and a decently sized boot. Estates are very big.

Costs (4 stars)

Long service intervals and excellent fuel economy (for the diesel versions) make the Megane impressively cost-effective. Depreciation is high, but is partially offset by generous discounts from Renault dealers.

Value (4 stars)

Standard equipment is reasonable on all but the most basic 1.4 Authentique, with all examples getting lots of safety kit.

Stereo (3 stars)

The standard audio system works well, although its buttons are a bit too small for easy use.
