Styling
(3 stars)
It's certainly not ugly, but it isn't the best looking hatch either. The rather gawky looking front is amplified by oversized headlamps, and the high roof of the car coupled with the rounded body makes it look clumsy rather than sleek. Smaller alloys on the basic models look lost under the arches.
Handling
(2 stars)
Steering is precise and assured, but the height of the car causes masses of body roll when cornering. Despite not being the sort of car you'd want to chuck around as such, it could benefit from more feel through the steering wheel.
Comfort
(5 stars)
The driving position is superb and there's plenty of seat adjustment. Suspension eases the car over bumps and potholes without too much upset, but doesn't lose any of the ride quality.
Quality
(4 stars)
Volkswagen's influence is obvious inside the car. Soft-touch materials on the dash and centre console looks elegant, although seat-trim is a little dated. Low-spec models don't get the soft-touch materials but even the plastic dash is solid and well built.
Performance
(3 stars)
They aren't exactly pocket rockets, but smaller engines are sweet revving and surprisingly nippy. The variety of engine options are bound to suit most peoples needs.
Roominess
(5 stars)
The taller body means more head room, plus it's a longer car than it's predecessor so leg room is also improved. The boot is more than adequate and there's plenty of space to accommodate 2 adults in the rear.
Costs
(4 stars)
Diesel variants offer great fuel economy and insurance groups are fairly low across the whole range.
Value
(3 stars)
There's not a massive amount of kit as standard, but things like an Aux port for MP3 players is a bonus. The Fabia 1 trim doesn't even get a glove box lid, and central locking isn't remote.
Stereo
(3 stars)
The basic model only gets speakers in the front, but stereo is easy to use and competent. Sat nav doesn't appear to be available even as an optional extra.
