Few cars soak up long journeys as well as an Avensis - quiet and refined at speed.

Quality (5 stars)

It feels far more solid and better assembled than any of its rivals - or pretty much anything of a similar size wearing a premium badge. Think poor man's Lexus.

Performance (3 stars)

Petrol engines give adequate performance, as do the lesser turbo diesel motors - but it's the range topping T180 diesel that comes closest to delivering excitement.

Roominess (4 stars)

Spacious inside front and rear - estate has impressive luggage capacity, too.

Costs (3 stars)

Diesels turn in decent fuel economy and other running costs are class competitive, although it's worth noting that the Avensis retains a higher percentage of its value than its more downmarket rivals. A semi-sensible private new buy.

Value (4 stars)

Strong equipment across the board, with loads of toys on the range-toppers. Offers very respectable value compared like-for-like with rivals.

Stereo (3 stars)

Stereo offers good sound quality, but the optional satnav system lacks a full colour screen and is tricky to use.
