Compliant chassis and a well-insulated cabin make the Passat an excellent place to spend time.

Constructed with the sort of solidity you'd justifiably expect from something wearing the "VW" badge. Cabin feels impressively classy.

The 1.6 FSI and 1.9 TDI motors aren't the most rapid units, but the more powerful 2.0 FSI petrol and 2.0 TDI diesel are both respectably brisk.

Roominess (5 stars)

The biggest car the segment has yet seen. The Passat is massive, offering an abundance of room to both front and rear seat passengers plus a generously proportioned boot.

Costs (4 stars)

Residual values are very solid compared to the dismal standards of rivals and the diesels turn in excellent fuel economy too.

Value (4 stars)

Entry level pricing is very attractive, although the most basic versions do without much in the way of standard kit. Gets pricey towards the top of the range - especially the largely pointless 3.2 litre V6 4Motion version.

Stereo (4 stars)

The standard audio system is easy to use and sounds great with a variety of upgrades available. Satnav is easy to use and gives accurate instructions.
