Car Statistics: Volkswagen - TiguanĀ  Series 07 (4 stars)

Styling (4 stars)

The latest Volkswagen look is the definition of inoffensive - perhaps to the point of bland. This does not mean it is a bad looking car though, and the Tiguan fits together well and is well proportioned.

Handling (4 stars)

It's nimble and feels light thanks to precise steering and a well-balanced chassis. It doesn't suffer much body roll either and is enjoyable and agile around country roads for an SUV. A choice between Sport and Comfort suspension settings seems an unnecessary extra though.

Comfort (4 stars)

The interior is comfortable and spacious, while solid build quality means there's little wind noise in the cabin. The ride is smooth and deals well with uneven surfaces.

Quality (4 stars)

Volkswagens have excellent build quality and the Tiguan is no different. The interior has been finished to a very high standard, and it should run for many years with very few reliability issues.

Performance (4 stars)

The 2.0-litre TDI is the best all-round option, with the best mix of performance and low-down pulling ability. The 1.4-litre twincharged petrol provides a worthy alternative for those that want to avoid diesel and is just as quick on the road in most situations, although it lacks a little of the pull at lower speeds.

Roominess (4 stars)

There's more than enough room for five, and a pretty decent boot to go with it. Taller adults will appreciate the excellent head and leg room, and there are plenty of on-board storage and cubby holes for bits and pieces.

Costs (3 stars)

Fuel economy is slightly improved over the outgoing car, with the best-selling diesel now claiming around 47mpg. The 1.4 petrol will not be much more to run, with economy around 42mpg, although higher CO2 emissions will naturally mean more on the tax bill. Those after better economy should steer clear of the 4WD option, which adds weight and reduces efficiency.

Value (4 stars)

Kit levels have been boosted with the facelift, and several items that were previously an option are now included on the mid-range SE trim. Park Assist is the best of these, although Bluetooth, the Fatigue Detection system and dual zone climate control will keep you from having to tick the option boxes.

Stereo (4 stars)

The optional sat nav has been upgraded and is easy to use, with a simple row of buttons either side of the display, which also serves as a touchscreen. The standard system is good, too, if less flashy.
