Car Statistics: Volvo - V70  Series 07 (4 stars)

Styling (4 stars)

Gone are the familiar rectangles and hard square nose, the V70 is smooth, sleek and stylish, while the XC70 has pseudo-4x4 styling. It looks more purposeful with sweeping bonnet lines and attractively-shaped headlights.

Handling (3 stars)

Volvo has improved the handling of the V70 dramatically; it feels much more nimble and agile and the steering is beautifully weighted. But while it is now an enjoyable drive, it's clear that the V70 isn't built to be thrown around.

Comfort (4 stars)

The suspension has been tuned perfectly to provide a mix between handling and comfort, and the arm-chair-like front seats feel cosy but secure.

Quality (4 stars)

There's no mistaking the excellent build quality, and you can expect the V70 to run forever with few problems.

Performance (3 stars)

The D5 diesels offer a mix of refinement and performance. There's a surge of power around 2,000rpm, but take it higher than 3,750rpm and there's not much more to get from the engine. Its real strength lies with long distance driving, when the car comes into its own.

Roominess (4 stars)

The V70 was well known for being roomy, but this new version has slightly less boot space than either the BMW 5 Series or Audi A6 Avant. It's unlikely the family Labrador would find reason to complain though.

Costs (3 stars)

According to Volvo it will manage about 43mpg, but it's more like 36mpg - although for a car this size that's pretty forgivable. Servicing is every 18,000 miles. But tax can be pricey as while diesel is around band D /E, petrol versions are well over 225g/km in bands F/G.

Value (3 stars)

Not the best value for money, as most of the features worth having will cost you extra. Its priced up with the BMW 5 Series and although it's well built and pleasant to drive, it doesn't quite have the badge or driving experience. Residuals on this type of car are usually quite good however.

Stereo (4 stars)

The Sat Nav is a good system and passengers can have hours of fun with the remote control, but the controls behind the steering wheel for the driver are a pain. It also slides up through the dash - something Volvo has done since the early 90's - which does sit in your view a little. The stereo system sounds great and integrated Bluetooth hands free phone function is handy too.
