Car insurance: 1,825 speeders caught in Bolton
Motorists have paid out £109,500 in speeding fines in Bolton, according to a newspaper report.
Statistics from an unnamed source, obtained by the Bolton News, reveal that 1,825 drivers were caught speeding on the town's roads by fixed or mobile speed cameras.
Figures also show an increase in the number of drivers - almost threefold - being fined since 2000.
Being caught speeding could see drivers' car insurance premiums affected.
Local data suggests 39 per cent of road accidents in Bolton are related to speed but the numbers of serious and fatal accidents in the town has decreased since 2001.
RAC Foundation chairman David Holmes called for more fine money to be allocated to projects improving road safety:
"They should not be used just to make money," he told the newspaper.
"There are many parts of the road system where changes to the layout of the road would save lives. These are not being done because of shortage of cash."
Accident rates on the M25 are being tackled with an upgrade to the speed camera system to a more sensitive digital system, the Highways Agency has announced.
