Motorists could be monitored over a large distance with the introduction of new speed cameras, it has been claimed.

A great number of drivers would pick up penalties if the fresh devices go live, campaigners have stated this week.

Motorists Against Detention argued that the authorities are looking to target people when more dangerous criminals are escaping the net.

"The idea is to trial this kit out so they can roll it out on every straight stretch of road in the country. The only people who will benefit are the technology firms behind the cameras," a spokesman commented.

He added that motorists could even lose their livelihoods if they get their licences taken away.
