Car insurance: Residents snap speeders in Derbyshire

Driving licence points and higher car insurance premiums are among the potential punishments for speeders caught in a new community road safety campaign in Derbyshire.

Villagers in Repton and Milton are so fed up of dangerous motoring in the area they will be patrolling roads with handheld speed cameras to ensure drivers stick to the limits, reports the Derbyshire Evening Telegraph.

A total of 12 locals have been trained by experts at the Safer South Derbyshire Partnership, which is supported by the police.

The so-called Community Speedwatch scheme will see offenders receive a police warning letter with the possibility of stricter penalties imposed on those caught more than once.

Volunteer Carl Bilson tells the newspaper: "There have been concerns for some time regarding the speed of traffic through Repton and Milton. This initiative gives local residents the chance to do something about it."

Temporary speed cameras have also been set up in Matlock in another Derbyshire police crackdown on speeding motorists, the Matlock Mercury reports.
