A speed camera in Essex should be removed because accident numbers have increased since its introduction, one motorist has
claimed.
Hamish Birchall said that there have been 15 serious incidents on the stretch next to Woodford Green Athletics
Club since 2001, after receiving figures from the Highways Agency, reports the Epping Forest Guardian.
In light of
the findings Mr Birchall argued that the device should be taken down from the spot on the M11, because he feels there is no
genuine need for it.
"The police took a year to respond to my question about the camera's impact on road safety
and when I received it on Sunday it didn't contain a shred of evidence to show it has cut accidents," he told the news
source.
He added that drivers' safety should be placed higher on the agenda than generating cash from speed cameras.
It
was revealed in Norfolk this week that alternatives are to be offered to speeding motorists instead of a fine, such as awareness
lessons.
Motorists caught speeding are likely to find that their motor insurance premiums are negatively impacted upon.
