It has been claimed that a mobile speed camera van in Ashton-in-Makerfield was operating illegally this week.
Tony
Riley, who works in Wigan, stated that the vehicle was parked fully on the pavement and therefore a possible obstruction,
reports the Wigan Evening Post.
He suggested that those in the van were "committing an offence" and therefore
negating their own role as law-enforcers.
Greater Manchester Casualty Reduction Partnership's Mike Downes claimed
that speed cameras are useful for deterring speeding drivers and that the officials present should have got clearance from
others.
"I must point out that the technicians are performing their role with the full authority of the Chief
Constable," he told the publication.
Additionally, a spokesman at the Wigan road policing unit explained that
it would have to be proven that the vehicle was obstructing the way.
Last week, the Merseyside Road Safety Partnership
announced that a high number of local drivers have been given fines in the area.
Drivers caught speeding may find
that their car insurance premiums are negatively impacted upon.
