More than £4 million was generated from speed cameras in Sussex in 2007, it has been revealed, something that could have
damaged motorsists' car insurance premiums.
Over
68,000 drivers were caught out speeding by the devices on the region's roads, the Argus said, while 15,408 motorists were
prosecuted.
The Sussex Safer Roads partnership claimed that the cameras are doing a good job by raising awareness
about safety issues.
Spokeswoman Emma Rogers told the publication that because the statistics have stayed fairly
constant over the last few years, it proves drivers have increased their vigilance.
"That constant figure is
good news because it means that people are starting to pay attention to all the publicity, the cameras and the warning signs
and slowing down on the roads," she commented.
But the figures came in for criticism from a number of bodies
such as the Safe Speed Road Safety Campaign.
Claire Armstrong from the organisation argued that drivers are "changing
their culture" and limiting speed because they know where the devices are placed.
In related news, it was revealed
last week more fixed speed cameras are being considered in Selby, Yorkshire, by local officials.
