In events that may influence drivers' motor insurance premiums, a man has been sacked following incorrect speed readings in the Lancashire area.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) noted that distance measurements on speed cameras were not accurate, something that led to £35,000 in fines being returned to motorists.

And the IPCC added that the member of staff, who worked for Lancashire police, had put his signature on court documents suggesting that the cameras were working without fault.

Commissioner for the north-west at the IPCC Naseem Malik claimed that "basic checks" were not undertaken and this is why the individual lost his job.

"I applaud the fact that Lancashire constabulary tackled this issue vigorously and it is worth noting that during the investigation the work of every other camera technician was checked and found to be in order," he commented.

Brand new speed cameras have been proposed for roads in Bristol, after accidents have been seen on Whiteladies Road and Long Cross.
