Motor insurance: Drivers 'not caught in bad conditions'
A high number of motorists are getting away with speeding offences because of poor weather conditions such as fog, it has been claimed.
Statistics gathered under the Freedom of Information Act by the Cambridge News stated that 36,000 have been captured by the devices but 14,000 have not been prosecuted because number plates are obscured.
Chief executive at Cambridgeshire Chambers of Commerce John Bridge argued that the devices are needed the most during harsh weather conditions.
"I am also concerned that the average speed cameras on the A14 are not catching speeding lorries which are only allowed to do a maximum speed of 50mph, which many clearly are not," he told the publication.
He added that the system should be fairer and that those speeding should be caught in any weather conditions.
Over 3,000 speeding convictions were reversed in Batford because the speed limit could not be confirmed, the St Albans & Harpenden Review has stated.
Motorists caught driving dangerously may find that their motor insurance premiums are negatively impacted upon.
