How to cancel your car insurance

What to do to cancel your car insurance or decline your renewal

In most circumstances you can cancel your policy online in your Swift Space, but there are some situations where you might not be able to, for example, if you’ve got any outstanding actions or changes on your account.

Cancellations following a claim

If there’s been a claim or accident on your policy before you cancel, you’ll need to pay the full premium for the year – there are no refunds at any time for cancellation after a claim.

Cancellations within 14 days

By law, you’re entitled to a minimum 14-day cooling-off period, during which you can cancel your policy, or any of the optional add-ons, and receive a pro-rata refund based on the time you’ve been covered by us.

Cancellations after 14 days

If your motor insurance policy is cancelled after the 14-day cooling-off period we will charge a pro-rata refund based on the time you’ve been covered by us, plus a cancellation fee of £52.50.

If you are paying by monthly instalments your instalments will end but you may not receive a return of premium and may be required to pay an additional amount for the time you have been covered.

Upon cancellation, you will need to declare that you will destroy all copies of the Certificate of Motor Insurance relating to your policy (whether held in paper, electronic, digital or any other format) within seven days, in accordance with the Road Traffic Act 1988.
