Car Insurance for Women

Women's car insurance has, traditionally, been cheaper than that for their male counterparts as statistically women have fewer accidents and make fewer claims, so they have been shown to be a lower risk to insure than men.

However a recent ruling by the European Court of Justice (ECJ) is set to change this.

The ruling means that, from the 21st December 2012, insurers will no longer be able to use gender as a factor when calculating the cost of someone's car insurance.

How will this impact women's car insurance?

It is likely that women under 35, especially teenagers will see a rise in the cost of their car insurance as a result of the ruling, with men under 35 more likely to see a decline.

However, women, and all drivers, can still take a number of steps to help reduce the cost of their car insurance:

  • Reduce the number of miles you drive per year
  • Drive a less powerful car or a car which falls into a lower car insurance group rating
  • Increasing the excess on your policy can also reduce your annual premium - car insurance policyholders must bear in mind that they will have to pay the excess should they be involved in an accident so should only set this at a level they can afford
