What to do if your car breaks down

Breakdowns

23 June 2025

It’s super stressful when your car makes funny noises or just stops working, especially when you need to be somewhere.

Here’s a simple guide on what to do if you find yourself stuck.

  1. Step 1: keep safe

First turn on your hazard lights to let other drivers know you need some help. If you can, steer your car to the left side of the road. If you’re on a motorway, aim for the hard shoulder.

  2. Step 2: get out carefully

Once you’ve stopped, get out of the car on the left side and away from traffic. It’s best to stand well back and stay safe. If you have a high-vis vest, put it on so drivers can spot you easily. If you’ve got a warning triangle, place it 45 metres (around 60 steps) behind your car, but only if you’re not on the motorway. If you’ve broken down on a motorway and you can’t get to safety, stay in the car, buckle up, and call 999 for help.

  3. Step 3: call for help

Next up, it’s time to give your breakdown cover provider a call.
